Samaná is a peninsula of forested hills running out into the Atlantic, with coconut groves down to the sand and reef close enough to swim to. Las Terrenas is its town.

01The town

A fishing village that grew up slowly

Las Terrenas was a fishing settlement until the 1970s and has never entirely stopped being one. Boats still come up onto the sand in the mornings. What grew around them is a town with an unusual mix — Dominican, French, Italian — which is why a place this size has the restaurants it does.

It is walkable, low-rise and green. There are no resort compounds cutting off the beach, and the shoreline stays public the whole way along. Most people get around on a scooter or on foot.

Three airports, one road

The Samaná highway from Santo Domingo made the peninsula reachable in a morning. Whichever airport you fly into, we can arrange a transfer to meet you.

    December – March

    Dry, breezy and busy. Humpback whales are in Samaná Bay from mid-January to mid-March.

  • Shoulder

    April – June

    Warm and quiet, with short afternoon showers. The best value of the year.

  • European peak

    July – August

    Hot and lively. Book early — the town fills with French and Italian visitors.

  • Low season

    September – November

    The wettest stretch and the hurricane window. Lowest rates, emptiest beaches.
